Papers in Bloom

We have been (or should I say, had been) having such beautiful Spring like weather here in Missouri. I checked in my back flowerbed for some blooms but did not find any, but I did find some inside! Some paper blooms! Quilling, better known as paper filigree, was popular back in the Victorian era. Unfortunately I do not have any antique pieces to show you, only new pieces.

Back in the 1990's when Victorian was all the rage I had an elderly lady from our local Historical Society make me a piece, and here it is.

I like the lily of the valley and the little butterfly.

I had it in a gold frame but needed it for Godey's Ladies print so I tucked it away unframed. And here it is again, still unframed. Sorry to say it is not my favorite piece. I hope the sweet lady who made it doesn't read this! :)

For a little staging fun I added my Austria tea set, minus the creamer. Found at a garage sale a few years ago for a song.

Just recently at a Church garage sale I bought this beauty in a shadow box for $2 I think. I totally adore this sweet bouquet with mums, baby's breath, bluebells, and tiny daisies to go with my little daisy cup.

I carried out the blue theme of the bouquet with a lacy handkerchief, tatting, and hand towel all on a silver tray (that is reflecting the light from the chandy up above!).

I have these little ornaments too, an angel and butterfly and then the miniature daffodils in a pot, all made of paper.

And just last week I found this Christmas glass ball at an antiques store on clearance for 25 cents! And I got the pink cut glass salt cellars at an auction this past Saturday. I thought they were so pretty, I have lots of salt cellars but not pink ones! Although they kind of look peach in the photo. :)

Well that is it for my quilling pieces. Thank you for visiting and have a wonderful week. As Spring draws nearer and nearer we'll have the real blooms then.

  1. Always enjoy learning a bit about the Victorian Era with your posts. Love the paper quilling. My mother-in-law collected antique salt cellars; each in a different color. Being the Health Food person that she was, she used them at each place setting for their daily vitamins. You always have a great display of linens to share!

  2. Dear Gina:
What an interesting post about Quilling. I mostly recall seeing Christmas ornaments with quilling. I was thinking maybe you could stain the background around that large oval one to make it look more antiqued?
I am on day 4 of a 40 sneeze cold - my first in many, many years. My hubby almost has the whole inside painted and is now restaining the woodwork. We are awaiting the carpet people soon.
We thought we'd be done by now! Ha!

  11. I like to quill and you have some pretty ones here. I have never seen any salt cellars in a color other that clear glass. I have a few but never the spoons to go with them. I wonder if the spoons can be purchased anywhere. Do you have a page that you may sell any of the smaller items like that? ( hint, hint). Beautiful quilled Christmas ornament.
