It's Lilac Time!

The other day I noticed the lilac bush loaded with beautiful blooms so I went out to cut some and in the process was inspired to post about them. So I got to thinking and planning and here is what I came up with.
With a vase full of blooms I staged this pretty vignette on my dresser tray...

using an antique postcard on a brass easel and a stick pin holder with a few purple stick pins.

Took a few blooms out of the vase and placed on some lace in my tray...

and had a little more fun with the pins...

Lilacs were a very popular Victorian subject for postcards and I have a lot to prove that. As you will see, lilacs were used on Christmas, Valentine and Easter cards as well as for general wishes.
Pictured below is a Christmas scrap piece in the shape of a paint pallette. Notice the white lilac, I have never seen a white lilac but was told they are more fragrant than the purple ones.

Pictured on this Easter postcard is a pink lilac. I have never seen a pink lilac before either, have you? Usually they are the light purple or the darker purple.

I have several Valentine postcards with lilacs on them. Look at the sweet little girls with their pretty dresses.

Another Valentine card with a cute little couple and their dog, all 3 dressed in purple with the boy holding a purple bouquet. I really don't think they are lilacs, but I'm saying it is for this post.

Here is a birthday greeting with a purple flower decorated horse and buggy. Not sure if they are lilacs either, but again, I like the purple for this post.

Another postcard with lilacs in a shoe, the lilacs were embellished with little sparkly beads

and for this last lilac postcard, my little faux birdie got out of its cage to join in the fun...

Well that is it for my lilac show, I hope you enjoyed it and have a wonderful week!

  3. I love Lilacs too and I love your vintage cards. I have a white lilac. That is what I have always called it, but how can a white lilac be lilac? Hmmm, smells heavenly. Your flowers are so perfect and your home must be filled with their lovely scent.

  5. Hello Gina. Happy Monday.. I love your Lilac Vignette. It is so delicate and pretty. I do love Lilacs and yours are perfection. We were thinking along the same lines. I just bought a couple more of Lilac bushes to add to my garden this year. I actually bought one in white and one in lavender. I am glad I stopped by for a peak. Your pictures are just beautiful.

Your lilacs are gorgeous, I like to look at them , however they make me sneeze LOL

I was hoping to run into you at Clarksville last weekend, at the last minute I went by myself, I just didn't want to miss anything

I bought a set of nesting pyrex mixing bowls for a gift for someone, from the antique mall south of town, I met a couple friends of Richard's and we went to lunch at the Station , it was real nice , I was pleasantly surprised

those sand bags were something to see ?

  11. Gina, your lilacs and lace (and vintage cards!) are stunning! I don't know where you live, but your lilacs are months ahead of mine, so it's nice to see them today! Can't wait until ours bloom again.

  12. Hi Gina,
Yes, the white lilacs are beautiful too. My neighbor across the street had both a purple and a white lilac bush in her yard. Sadly, she cut them both down. Another friend has pink ones and they are simply divine! I adore them myself and can't wait for them to bloom. Your lace is gorgeous and you have a sweet collection of post cards. Thanks for sharing and Happy Mother's Day!

    Blessings,
    Sandi

  13. Good Afternoon Gina, I adore lilacs, I love their perfume, they are just so beautiful.
It was interesting to see all the Victorian cards with lilac sprigs. Can I ask, were they hat pins displayed with the cards?

  15. What beautiful lilacs you have. I have seen the white, pink and purple at Mackinac Island. Each year they have a lilac festival and I was blessed to see it, once.
Your lilacs are so large and colorful. I do wish they would survive in my zone. I tried one once and not only did it not bloom it didn't even grow. I will have to settle for seeing your great photos.
You put together a lovely post with the vintage cards.
    Best, Ginger

  18. Hi Gina, I thought I had commented to you on this post before I left on the short trip, but guess not. As you know how much I love lilacs and yours are gorgeous.. I picked a huge bouquet first chance I got for the house and Captain and I both sneezed so much, I had to put them out on the porch. What a disappointment!! Never happened before. My bush didn't produce as well or as long as last year. Another let down..Happy Mother's Day..Judy

  19. Your lovely lilacs pair wonderfully with the vintage lace, stickpins and postcards. Enjoyed all the cards you included -- I don't have a single one of these! Your Christmas paint palette is most unique. Sadly, I don't have any lilacs in my yard. Makes for a pleasant walk when their scent perfumes the neighborhood. Yes, I have seen both pink and white here in Michigan.

  24. Gina, your lilacs are gorgeous! I love them as well. Mine are just getting ready to bloom. I have 6 bushes, but all are quite young. Only my 3 miniatures will be full of blooms. The others will just have a few. I had a white lilac at my previous home. It was a start from my sister. They really are pretty, but I didn't notice they had a stronger smell. I was thinking about the white lilac this morning and wondering if my son had any blooms on it. He and his wife bought the home. I love your pins and all of your sweet postcards! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
    hugs,
